Illegal Strike Halts Lowveld Tourism

Key nature reserves along Mpumalanga’s Panorama Route remain closed due to an illegal strike by employees, causing significant disruptions to tourism.

Simphiwe Shungube, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA), confirmed on January 17 that several reserves are inaccessible. The agency’s executive management is in talks with organized labor and striking employees.

The Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism (KLCBT) has intervened, citing severe impacts on the local tourism industry. In a statement issued on January 19, the KLCBT warned that it would open criminal cases if the matter isn’t resolved by January 20.

According to the KLCBT, the strike is not union-led but involves employees protesting the recent dismissal or suspension of colleagues. Despite MTPA issuing a directive for staff to return to work by January 16 under threat of disciplinary action, the strike persists.

“This is industrial sabotage by individuals,” said the KLCBT. “If left unattended, MTPA management will also bear responsibility for the resulting losses. We are prepared to open criminal cases on behalf of our members and the tourism industry.”

Shungube responded, stating the MTPA is adhering to the Labour Relations Act to handle the situation appropriately.

As negotiations continue, the closures threaten economic strain on the region’s vital tourism sector.
