President Cyril Ramaphosa has highlighted the immense potential of South Africa’s tourism sector to drive inclusive growth, emphasizing its reliance on the nation’s natural and cultural endowments.
In his weekly address, the President praised South Africa’s attractions, from beaches and national parks to cultural and heritage sites. “Our country is an attractive destination, blessed with natural splendour integral to our heritage and economy,” he said.
South Africa is home to 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Robben Island and the Cradle of Humankind. These sites, alongside attractions like Table Mountain and the Kruger National Park, draw millions of tourists annually.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism is rebounding. In 2023, the nation recorded 8.5 million international arrivals, generating over R95 billion. Domestic tourism also surged, with South Africans taking over 21 million trips between January and July.
To boost tourism further, the government is implementing measures like improving visa processes, enhancing infrastructure, and ensuring safety at tourist sites. The sector, employing about 1.5 million people, benefits from initiatives like the Presidential Employment Stimulus, which supports young tourism monitors and small tourism businesses.
Sustainability is another growing focus, with eco-friendly and sustainable tourism ventures gaining traction.
This year, South Africa will host the first G20 summit on African soil, providing a platform to promote the country as a premier tourism destination. “Tourism is pivotal for job creation and sustainable development,” said President Ramaphosa.
A new Tourism White Paper released in October 2023 aims to foster a sustainable, competitive, and inclusive industry. “By working together, we can turn our natural splendour into a driver of growth, jobs, and shared prosperity,” the President concluded.
