A minibus taxi driver was arrested while attempting to smuggle 14 undocumented children, the youngest just four years old, into South Africa through the Lebombo Border Post.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Mmemme Mogotsi, stated that BMA border guards intercepted the taxi on Friday, December 6. The children, aged between four and 16, were being transported from Mozambique without proper documentation.
“The driver was immediately arrested and charged with aiding and abetting illegal entry under the Immigration Act. The rescued children were handed over to the Department of Social Development for care and support. The BMA remains committed to intensifying its efforts to safeguard South Africa’s ports of entry and protect vulnerable individuals,” said Mogotsi.
Focus on Protection and Security
BMA Commissioner Dr. Michael Masiapato emphasized the importance of border guards in preventing the exploitation of vulnerable groups.
“These incidents highlight the critical role our border guards play in safeguarding vulnerable individuals and preventing criminal syndicates from exploiting our borders. The Border Management Authority remains steadfast in its mission to combat illegal activities and uphold South Africa’s sovereignty,” he stated.
Dr. Masiapato also noted that during the festive season, deployments have been intensified to address border-related criminal activities.
Commitment During 16 Days of Activism
As South Africa observes 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, the BMA has reinforced its commitment to ensuring ports of entry are not used for crimes such as human smuggling, particularly targeting women and children.
The BMA urged citizens and stakeholders to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities near border areas. “Community vigilance and cooperation are crucial in combating border-related crimes,” Dr. Masiapato added.
