South Africa Celebrates 30 Years of International Support for Water Sector

Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, David Mahlobo, has expressed gratitude to the international community for their enduring support of South Africa’s water and sanitation sector since the advent of democracy 30 years ago.

Speaking at a session with Ambassadors in Centurion on Friday, Mahlobo highlighted the crucial role played by international partnerships in ensuring sustainable and equitable water supply for all South Africans.

The meeting, hosted by the Department of Water and Sanitation under the theme “Celebrating 30 Years of Sustainable Partnership”, included representatives from nations such as China, Japan, Cuba, Egypt, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Senegal, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland.

Mahlobo thanked these nations for their contributions, both in supporting South Africa’s fight for democracy and in strengthening the water sector.

“Your unwavering support ensured equitable and sustainable water supply and dignified sanitation for all citizens. We thank you for your notable contributions,” Mahlobo said.

He called for continued collaboration to ensure water security across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the continent, urging partners to provide honest feedback on policies that could hinder participation.

The Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Salih Omar Abdu, emphasized the transformative role of water in fostering economic growth, social equality, and environmental sustainability in the region.

The Ambassadors reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties with South Africa and advancing shared goals in water security and development.
