Two Mozambican nationals, aged 34 and 47, were arrested in Mpumalanga in connection with the brutal murder of 41-year-old Vinolia Sedibe during a farm attack.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, confirmed that detectives from Lydenburg SAPS made a significant breakthrough on December 3, just one day after the tragic incident occurred.

According to Mdhluli, the suspects allegedly stormed a farmhouse, held two women hostage, and carried out a house robbery. The attack escalated when one of the women, later identified as Sedibe, was strangled. Her body was discovered in a nearby bush following the incident.

“Their arrest stems from swift action by police detectives who responded immediately to the crime scene and conducted a meticulous investigation,” said Mdhluli.

The suspects face multiple charges, including murder, house robbery, and attempted rape. They are scheduled to appear before the Mashishing Magistrate’s Court.

The arrest has drawn strong condemnation from acting provincial commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, who expressed concern over the violent nature of the crime, particularly during South Africa’s 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

“This heinous crime strikes at the heart of our fight against gender-based violence,” said Mkhwanazi. “However, I commend the swift action of our police officers and the cooperation of community members who provided critical information that led to the arrests.”

The case highlights the importance of collective efforts in addressing violent crimes, especially those targeting women and vulnerable individuals. Mkhwanazi reassured the public of the police’s commitment to ensuring justice for Sedibe and her family.

Community members have expressed outrage over the incident, calling for stricter measures to safeguard rural areas. Farm attacks remain a significant concern in South Africa, often characterized by extreme violence.
