The South African Police Service (SAPS) has reported a downward trend in serious crimes from 1 July to 30 September 2024, reflecting an overall decline of 5.1% in 17 community-reported crime categories.

Crime Declines and Increases

Key reductions include:

• Murder: Decreased by 5.8%
• Sexual offenses: Down by 2.5%
• Robbery with aggravating circumstances: Fell by 8.8%
• Rape: Declined by 3.1%
• Robbery at non-residential premises: Dropped by 21.1%

However, increases were noted in:

• Attempted murder: Up 2.2%
• Assault GBH: Rose 1%
• Commercial crime: Increased by a notable 18.5%

Operation Shanela’s Impact

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu attributed the improvements to Operation Shanela, which achieved:

• 262,396 arrests through 7,549 high-density operations and over eight million actions.
• Seizures of counterfeit goods worth R22.2 million, 93 firearms, and 846 rounds of ammunition.
• Border policing efforts confiscated drugs valued at R498 million, stolen vehicles worth R66.9 million, and additional firearms and explosives.

Collaboration for Enhanced Effectiveness

Minister Mchunu emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships with the Justice cluster, National Prosecuting Authority, and Home Affairs to bolster efforts against crime. Plans to consolidate and expand Operation Shanela will be announced soon.

This decline in crime reflects a positive step forward, although challenges in specific areas highlight the need for continued vigilance and collaboration.
