Police in Mpumalanga are investigating the mysterious death of a 74-year-old man whose body was discovered in a manhole on 8 November 2024. Ernest Ranchmann, a resident of Watervalsbank farm in Leslie, had been reported missing a week earlier, on 1 November, after his family was unable to contact him.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Captain Magonseni Nkosi, Ranchmann’s body was discovered in the morning by cow herders who noticed an unpleasant odour emanating from a manhole on the farm. The herders immediately alerted the authorities, prompting a response from local law enforcement.

When the police arrived at the scene, they found Ranchmann’s body, and upon further investigation, a handgun with live ammunition and one spent cartridge case were discovered nearby. The discovery of these items has raised further questions about the circumstances of his death.

Ranchmann had been reported missing after his family tried multiple times to reach him by phone to wish him a happy birthday. According to his family, when they could not get through to him, they became concerned. They went to his farm residence, where they found the door ajar but no sign of Ranchmann. His personal belongings, including his vehicle and cellphone, were still inside the house, further deepening the mystery of his disappearance.

The police investigation has raised numerous questions about the circumstances surrounding Ranchmann’s death, and authorities are working to piece together the events leading up to the discovery of his body. At this stage, it is unclear whether foul play was involved or if the death was accidental.

“Circumstances surrounding his mysterious death are still under investigation,” Captain Nkosi said. “We are following several leads and are doing everything we can to determine what happened to Mr Ranchmann.”
