Lebombo Border Post Temporarily Closed Due to Political Unrest

The Lebombo Border Post has been temporarily closed since yesterday due to political unrest on the Mozambican side. This measure was taken after reports surfaced of vehicles being torched near the border.

Dr. Michael Masiapato, commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), stated that the closure aims to ensure the safety of cross-border transporters, travelers, traders, and officials. The BMA is collaborating closely with Mozambican authorities and South African law enforcement to monitor the situation and reopen the port as soon as it is safe.

South African officials are on-site, assisting, and have provided refuge for seven Mozambican officials who requested protection on the South African side. In the meantime, travelers are advised to use the Mananga Border Post, which routes through eSwatini and connects to Mozambique via the Lomahashe Border Post.

The BMA and Mozambican counterparts are working urgently to address the situation, and authorities have expressed appreciation for the cooperation received so far.
