Mpumalanga SAPS Launch 2024/2025 Safer Festive Season Operation

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga officially launched the 2024/2025 Safer Festive Season Operation on 19 October at Mangweni Trust, near Komatipoort, within the Tonga Policing Precinct. The event saw a significant gathering of law enforcement agencies, including SAPS, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Traffic, Emergency Medical Services, and officials from Home Affairs and Correctional Services, along with other stakeholders.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of the MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Honourable Jackie Macie, and the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi. Traditional leaders and the Executive Mayors of Ehlanzeni District Municipality and Nkomazi Local Municipality were also among the dignitaries in attendance.

The day’s proceedings began with a charitable gesture, as food parcels were donated to Silindokuhle School for Special Needs, demonstrating a commitment to community upliftment. Sponsors such as Gift of the Givers, SANPARKS, Kudu Farm, Spar (the Groove), and the Lebombo Taxi Association contributed to making this initiative a success.

The 2024/2025 Operational Plan was presented to the MEC during the launch, highlighting the strategic focus areas for the upcoming festive season. The plan’s key priorities include intensifying efforts to combat gender-based violence, addressing serious crimes such as carjackings and house robberies, and collaborating with the Border Management Authority and Home Affairs to tackle issues like human trafficking and drug trafficking.

Spectacular displays, including a parachute jump by the SAPS Special Task Force, a drive-past, and a fly-past, captivated the audience and demonstrated the readiness of Mpumalanga’s law enforcement agencies.

In his address, Major General Mkhwanazi emphasised the importance of safeguarding the community, with a strong focus on eradicating criminal activities and ensuring public safety. He underscored the troop’s preparedness to deal with cash-in-transit robberies and other illicit activities. The operation will also prioritise enforcing legislation related to firearms and liquor, as well as securing critical infrastructure against potential threats.

Honourable Jackie Macie pledged the government’s unwavering support for the operation, reiterating the commitment to promoting safety and security in the province. As law enforcement agencies unite for this crucial initiative, the public is encouraged to cooperate with authorities and report any suspicious activities to help ensure a peaceful and secure festive season for all residents and visitors.
