October 18, 2024Police Probe Viral Video of Alleged Theft Assault

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga has launched an investigation following the circulation of a viral video depicting a man accused of stealing meat being assaulted by a group in Mayflower, Gert Sibande District.
The incident, which occurred on 16 October, gained public attention after the footage was widely shared on social media platforms. In the video, a group confronts the man next to a bakkie loaded with various items, including snacks. The man is seen being instructed to unload the vehicle, revealing meat concealed under other goods and wrapped in black plastic bags.
“It is further heard in the background of the video that the man has been accused of theft of meat,” stated police spokesperson, Captain Magonseni Nkosi. The footage also shows the man being assaulted, sparking concerns about vigilantism and the obstruction of justice.
“From watching this video, one could sense the possibility of defeating the ends of justice. Since then, no one has reported the matter to the police or brought someone forward as a suspect in relation to the video,” Nkosi added.
SAPS have since managed to locate the man featured in the video and continue to pursue the investigation. “The police have already started following the matter with the hope of ensuring that justice is served,” said Nkosi.
Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, condemned the incident and called on the community to work with law enforcement rather than resorting to vigilante actions. “We have legitimate structures to fight crime, such as the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and the Community in Blue. Members of the public can use these platforms to forge partnerships with law enforcement agencies,” stated Mkhwanazi.
He strongly warned against vigilantism, emphasising that it often leads to further criminal acts. “We totally discourage lawlessness and vigilantism, as it breeds other crimes like assaults or even murders,” he cautioned.
The incident has highlighted ongoing concerns about communities taking the law into their own hands, with SAPS urging the public to report crimes through official channels rather than resorting to violence. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are committed to holding those involved accountable.
