Tragic Masoyi Incident Leaves One Boy Dead, Another Injured

The police in Masoyi are investigating a tragic incident that occurred over the weekend, resulting in the death of a 16-year-old boy and injuries sustained by another boy, aged 12. This unfortunate event unfolded when the two boys embarked on a trip on October 12, 2024, possibly for hiking or hunting, accompanied by their dogs.

Concern grew among their families the following day, October 13, when the boys did not return home. Instead, only their dogs returned, prompting the families to report the situation to the police. Recognizing the urgency, the police quickly mobilized resources and launched a search operation to locate the missing boys.

The search efforts involved the SAPS Search and Rescue team, along with members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and local volunteers. Their collaborative approach underscored the community’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its members.

Tragically, one boy, aged 16, was found with serious injuries. Despite the rapid response of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The other boy, aged 12, was discovered injured and was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical treatment. His condition is being monitored closely as authorities continue to gather details surrounding the incident.

An inquest case has been opened to investigate the circumstances leading to the boys’ tragic outing and subsequent injuries. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the swift and collaborative response of the police, CPF, and volunteers involved in the search operation. He highlighted the importance of community support during such distressing times and expressed gratitude to those who volunteered their resources to assist in locating the missing boys.

The community is left in mourning as they grapple with the loss of a young life and the injuries of another. As investigations continue, authorities are urging families to prioritize safety during outdoor activities, especially when children are involved. The police remain committed to uncovering the facts surrounding this heartbreaking incident, aiming to provide answers and support to the affected families.

The community’s response reflects a united front in the face of tragedy, emphasizing the critical role that cooperation plays in ensuring safety and well-being in Masoyi.
