The Mpumalanga MEC for Public Works, Roads, and Transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, has officially announced the commencement of a highly anticipated road upgrade in Dludluma, Nkomazi. The project marks a significant step towards addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges in the area.
Just over three months into his tenure, Thomo identified the road issue as a top priority. On a recent site visit, he and other local dignitaries, including the executive mayor of Nkomazi Local Municipality, Phindile Magagula, participated in a ceremonial sod-turning event, signifying the beginning of the upgrade of the D2950 from the D797 towards the ring road in Dludluma. Thomo confirmed that construction would begin shortly.
“The current condition of this road has been deteriorating over time and is no longer sufficient to handle the increased traffic volume in the area. The road is a crucial access route to various services within Dludluma Village and serves as the main bus route for commuters. We are delighted to finally deliver this project and are grateful for the positive response from the community. Additionally, this project will create employment opportunities for local residents,” Thomo stated.
The road upgrade has been long-awaited by the residents of Dludluma, who have raised concerns on several occasions about the deteriorating state of local roads. The condition of the D2950, in particular, has affected daily life, with the road providing vital access to key services such as the Dludluma Clinic and Mbombo Combined School.
Last year, local residents were stranded due to flooding that made the roads impassable after heavy rains. In February 2023, a major storm destroyed parts of the gravel road connecting Ngwenyeni Village, further highlighting the need for long-term infrastructure solutions. The damage made it difficult for commuters to travel to essential locations, including schools and healthcare facilities.
While the Nkomazi Local Municipality has attempted to maintain the roads by grading them, residents have expressed dissatisfaction, especially during protests dating back to 2017. The lack of substantial action left many feeling neglected as the road’s condition continued to worsen.
The upgrade of the D2950 is expected to alleviate these issues, improving access to essential services and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents in the area. Furthermore, the project will create job opportunities for locals, contributing to the economic upliftment of the community.
As construction begins, the provincial government remains committed to improving road infrastructure across Mpumalanga, ensuring that communities like Dludluma benefit from safe and accessible roads.
