Matriculants from schools within the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) are set to take their National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations from October 21 to November 27, 2024. A total of 173 inmates will be sitting for the exams, marking an important milestone in their academic and rehabilitative journey.
In a statement, the DCS expressed its satisfaction with the level of preparedness of the matriculants. The inmates have successfully completed the academic syllabus and undergone various assessments throughout the year. Educators in the department’s 18 schools remain confident in their students’ abilities, having worked diligently to ensure all candidates are thoroughly prepared. The department also confirmed that all necessary textbooks and stationery were delivered in a timely manner, ensuring no delays in the learning process.
National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale, praised the educators for their hard work and dedication in preparing the inmates for this important exam. “Education not only empowers offenders with knowledge but also offers them a path to a new life. It remains our commitment to provide growth and development opportunities for every inmate, as we believe in the power of education to transform lives,” said Thobakgale.
Education is seen as a critical tool in the rehabilitation process within correctional facilities, providing offenders with skills that will aid their reintegration into society post-release. Through collaboration with the Department of Basic Education, DCS schools have consistently performed well, often surpassing the national pass rate. In 2023, DCS schools achieved an outstanding 93% pass rate, with nine schools reaching a perfect 100%.
In 2024, DCS introduced the Intelsat Telematics System at the Johannesburg Correctional Centre, further enhancing inmates’ learning experiences by providing access to valuable study materials and resources through technological means.
Additionally, the department prides itself on maintaining an incident-free record during previous NSC examinations. This reflects the professionalism of officials and the strict adherence to exam protocols set by the Department of Basic Education.
As the exams approach, Thobakgale encouraged all matriculants within DCS schools to take full advantage of this opportunity. “We encourage all matriculants in our schools to seize this opportunity as part of their personal development journey,” he concluded.
This year’s exams represent another step forward in DCS’s ongoing commitment to education and rehabilitation, reinforcing the transformative power of learning for inmates across South Africa.
