A tragic accident near Mbombela has claimed the lives of four people, including a child, after a collision between an SUV and a truck. The victims, including the SUV driver and three occupants, were killed instantly and burnt beyond recognition when both vehicles caught fire.

Motorists travelling between Mbombela and Barberton have been advised to use the R38 via Kaapmuiden, as investigations into the crash continue. The driver of the truck survived but sustained injuries.

Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, stated, “The cause of the crash remains unclear, but investigations are underway.” Motorists have been urged to exercise extra caution due to the “unfavourable” weather conditions expected to persist throughout the weekend.

Previous Collision in the Same Region

Last month, another fatal crash on the D2296 road between Karino and Mbombela involved a midibus, a bakkie, and an articulated truck, leaving three people dead. The crash occurred as the midibus was transporting learners to various schools in Mbombela.

In that incident, the deceased included the driver and a passenger of the bakkie, as well as one learner in the midibus. Mmusi confirmed that 27 people were injured, including the driver of the midibus and 26 learners, all of whom were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Authorities continue to remind drivers to stay vigilant on the roads, especially in challenging weather conditions.
