The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has ordered an investigation into the death of a 60-year-old man who reportedly died after being assaulted by police officers. The incident took place in Piet Retief, where two SAPS members had responded to a domestic violence complaint at a local residence.

The man succumbed to his injuries on 09 September 2024, after being admitted to the hospital. While the circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation, serious allegations have been raised concerning the conduct of the officers involved.

Major General (Dr) Mkhwanazi expressed deep concern over the situation and emphasized that misconduct within the police service would not be tolerated. “There is nothing that will be swept under the rug. We can never allow any form of misconduct by our members. If these officers are found to have acted unlawfully, they will face the full might of the law,” he stated.

An immediate internal investigation has been launched to thoroughly examine the events leading to the man’s death. The SAPS is committed to maintaining the highest standards of conduct, and any officer found guilty of violating these standards will face disciplinary action.

Additionally, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has opened a murder investigation. The SAPS in Mpumalanga will fully cooperate with IPID’s inquiry to ensure transparency and accountability.

“We ask the community to remain patient as the investigations proceed. The integrity and trust of the SAPS are of utmost importance, and we are committed to ensuring justice is served,” Mkhwanazi added.
