September 5, 2024SA Called to Learn Sign Language
South Africans are urged to learn South African Sign Language (SASL) as the country joins the global community in commemorating International Month for Deaf People. The month of September is dedicated to raising awareness about the rights and challenges faced by the deaf community worldwide.
This year’s theme, “Sign up for Sign Language Rights,” emphasizes the importance of learning sign language to foster inclusivity and effective communication with deaf individuals.
Minister of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, highlighted the significance of learning SASL as the best way to connect with the deaf community. She stressed the need for advocacy and public initiatives that promote the rights of deaf individuals and help eliminate discrimination.
With over four million deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in South Africa, the recent amendment of the Constitution to include South African Sign Language as the 12th official language is a monumental step forward in promoting linguistic rights.
The Minister also celebrated 2024 as a landmark year, with Mia Le Roux becoming the first person with hearing impairment to win Miss South Africa. The department encourages all sectors of society to develop initiatives this month to honor the deaf community and advocate for their rights.
