September 4, 2024Mpumalanga Premier Welcomes Launch of Carbon Capture and Storage Programme
The Mpumalanga Premier, Mr. Mandla Ndlovu, has expressed his excitement about the launch of a groundbreaking Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) programme at Leandra in the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality. This initiative, the first of its kind in the province, is seen as a significant advancement in South Africa’s efforts to address ongoing power challenges and reduce carbon emissions.
The launch event was attended by prominent figures, including Minister of Mineral Resources & Energy Mr. Gwede Mantashe, MEC Thulasizwe Thomo of Public Works, Roads and Transport, MEC Makhosaza Masilela of Economic Development and Tourism, various Executive Mayors, and Acting Director-General Mr. Peter Nyoni.
Premier Ndlovu highlighted the importance of the CCS programme, noting its potential to significantly reduce emissions while preserving the lifespan of coal in Mpumalanga. “Here in Mpumalanga, we have many coal mines, which are believed to contribute to air pollution. I am pleased that we will now be able to store carbon dioxide, extending the lifespan of coal,” said Ndlovu.
The programme aims to capture carbon dioxide emissions and store them using advanced technology, positioning Mpumalanga at the forefront of innovative solutions to combat climate change.
Mpumalanga, known for its coal mines, is often cited as a significant source of carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. The international standard has set a goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, and the CCS programme represents a critical step towards meeting this target.
