Operation Shanela Results in Arrest of Nine Alleged Precious Metals Thieves in Davel

Operation Shanela continues to make strides in the fight against crime, with nine suspects arrested in Davel for allegedly stealing chrome. This follows the recent arrest of six individuals accused of stealing chrome and copper in Bethal on, 28 August 2024.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, affirmed the commitment of the police and other law enforcement agencies to clamp down on those unlawfully benefiting from the theft of precious materials in the province.

According to reports, the first two suspects were apprehended in the act, thanks to the pivotal role played by Fidelity Security. These suspects were caught at a railway line, allegedly offloading chrome from a train. They were found in possession of 14 fully loaded bags of chrome.

Shortly after, seven additional suspects were arrested nearby. They were found in a Toyota Corolla, believed to be intended for transporting the stolen chrome. None of the suspects could produce permits for the possession of the materials, leading to charges for the unlawful possession of precious metals. The vehicle was also confiscated and is subject to further investigation.

The police have indicated that additional charges, including theft, may be brought against the suspects as the investigation progresses.

The suspects appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on , 30 August 2024, and have been remanded in custody. They are expected to appear in court again this week.

Major General Mkhwanazi welcomed the arrests and commended the strong partnership between the police and other law enforcement agencies in tackling crime.
