South Africa continues to grapple with the persistent challenges of unemployment, inequality, and poverty. The ongoing support and cooperation from Norway in helping to address these critical issues have been warmly welcomed by the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola.
Speaking during the visit of Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, Lamola highlighted the importance of Norway’s role as a significant investor in South Africa’s renewable energy sector. This investment aligns with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s vision of fostering public-private partnerships to drive economic growth and job creation.
“Our struggle for a better South Africa is intertwined with our pursuit of a better Africa in a better world. We welcome Norway’s commitment to collaborate with us as we advance efforts to promote peace and security on the continent and support regional and continental integration,” Lamola stated.
The Minister also expressed South Africa’s desire to work with partners like Norway to promote peace and reconstruction across Africa. He emphasised that such cooperation should enable Africa to fully leverage its resources and potential, rather than relying solely on aid.
During their discussions, the two ministers reviewed bilateral trade, particularly Norwegian investments in South Africa’s renewable energy sector, and touched on multilateral affairs, South Africa’s upcoming G20 Presidency, and geopolitical issues, including peace efforts in South Sudan, Palestine, and Ukraine.
“Our engagement today allows us to review the current state of our bilateral political and economic relations and identify opportunities to deepen our collaboration,” Lamola said, adding that Norway remains a steadfast ally, having supported South Africa during its struggle against apartheid.
Lamola underscored the shared values of democracy, respect for human rights, and social justice that unite South Africa and Norway, and he praised Norway’s contributions to South Africa’s ongoing efforts to overcome the legacies of apartheid.
He concluded by highlighting the importance of multilateralism in addressing global challenges such as peace and security, climate change, and human rights. Lamola expressed hope that the continued collaboration between South Africa and Norway would further strengthen their bilateral relationship and contribute to the broader global good
