Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, has affirmed the effectiveness of women officers in crime-fighting, following the successful Operation Basadi on the eve of Women’s Day.
This operation saw over 230 women from various units including the National Intervention Unit, Detectives, and the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit, collaborate with other law enforcement agencies. They demonstrated exceptional skill and coordination under the leadership of Major General Dorah Xaba, the Acting District Commissioner of Ehlanzeni.
The operation resulted in 37 arrests and the seizure of significant contraband, including 22.5 kilograms of dagga, equipment used in illegal mining, weapons, and materials presumably intended for unlawful activities. Among those apprehended were six individuals violating immigration laws and a 24-year-old serial rapist with multiple charges against him, highlighting the critical role women play in addressing violent crimes.
General Mkwanazi praised the operation’s success, emphasizing the capability and dedication of female officers in ensuring community safety. “As we celebrate Women’s Day, it’s important to recognize and commend our female officers for their dedication to combating crime and ensuring safety,” he stated.
