August 8, 2024President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to lead the national Women’s Day commemoration
The event, symbolizing 68 years since the pivotal 1956 women’s march against the Pass Laws at the Union Buildings, highlights the theme “Celebrating 30 Years of Freedom Towards Women’s Development.” This march was a monumental display of defiance by 20,000 South African women against oppressive laws and societal norms.
The Denis Nel Stadium will serve as the venue for the day’s events, which commemorate this historical act of bravery and resistance that has since inspired ongoing efforts towards gender equality in South Africa. Since the first National Women’s Day celebration in 1994, South Africa has recognized the day as an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in advancing women’s rights and their economic empowerment through initiatives like the Women’s Charter.
This year’s commemoration is particularly significant as it marks the first led by the Government of National Unity (GNU), focusing on integrating all South Africans in celebrating the strides made towards gender equality. President Ramaphosa’s visit will include a tour of a services-on-wheels exhibition and a trade expo showcasing enterprises led by women in the Northern Cape, emphasizing the national effort to enhance women’s economic opportunities and contributions across the country.
