August 7, 2024De Lille Targets Major Increase in Tourism Arrivals by 2030
Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille announced ambitious plans to boost South Africa’s tourism arrivals to 15 million by 2030, highlighting tourism as a key sector driving economic growth and employment. Speaking to the media, De Lille outlined the government’s strategy to align with the National Development Plan (NDP) and other strategic frameworks aimed at revitalizing the tourism industry.
De Lille emphasized the need for rapid implementation of these plans, which will be carried out in partnership with the private sector. This collaboration spans the entire tourism value chain, aiming to enhance the sector’s contributions to the economy post-COVID-19 recovery.
The tourism sector, vital for its economic contributions and employment opportunities, is part of a broader effort under the Government of National Unity (GNU) to drive inclusive growth, reduce poverty, and create a capable, ethical, and developmental state. Initiatives include improving visa regimes, increasing direct flights, streamlining tour operator licensing, and upgrading infrastructure to showcase South Africa’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
Further supporting these goals, Operation Vulindlela will work alongside the Departments of Home Affairs, Transport, and Sport, Arts and Culture to facilitate these enhancements. De Lille also highlighted the adoption of advanced technologies like AI to boost South Africa’s tourism offerings.
The briefing also saw contributions from Nombulelo Guliwe, CEO of SA Tourism, who echoed the sentiment of significant impact expected over the next five years due to these initiatives. Thato Mothopeng from The South African Township and Village Tourism Association emphasized the importance of discussing and implementing strategies to expand the tourism sector to create more jobs.
This concerted effort signifies a robust commitment to not only recovering but significantly expanding South Africa’s position as a top global tourism destination.
