The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced a recall of the 50ml single-use neutralizing shampoo included in Dark and Lovely Moisture Plus Kits, both Regular and Super, as well as the Dark and Lovely Anti-Breakage Kit. Consumers are being urged to cease using these products and return them to the point of purchase for a full refund.

This recall was prompted by Loreal, the manufacturer, after routine quality controls revealed the presence of bacteria in the shampoo. Although the product is designed for single use, there is a significant risk of scalp infections for individuals with compromised immune systems if they use the shampoo.

NCC Deputy Commissioner Thezi Mabuza emphasized the importance of discontinuing use of the product and returning it for a refund. “While this is a single-use shampoo, we urge South Africans who might still have these products in their possession to stop use and return to the point of purchase for a full refund. According to the manufacturer, using this shampoo may lead to scalp infections in those with compromised immune systems,” Mabuza stated.

The affected products were produced in April 2023 and distributed across South Africa. They were also exported to several neighboring countries, including Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Kenya, Ghana, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Morocco, and Nigeria.

The Consumer Protection Act requires that manufacturers and producers ensure their products are of good quality and free from defects. Mabuza urged suppliers and manufacturers to prioritize consumer safety. “The Commission is monitoring the recall based on its Recall Guidelines,” Mabuza said.

The NCC is an agency of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, dedicated to protecting consumer rights and ensuring product safety. Consumers are advised to follow this recall notice and prioritize their health by returning the affected products promptly.
