Title: Inaugural Marakele MTB Challenge and Mountain Bike Trails Launched
On May 25, 2024, history was made at Marakele National Park in Limpopo, as South African National Parks (SANParks) and the SANParks Honorary Rangers jointly inaugurated the first-ever Marakele MTB Challenge. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Marakele’s wilderness, this event marked a thrilling milestone in the realm of mountain biking and conservation.
The Marakele MTB Challenge, a collaborative effort between SANParks and the Honorary Rangers, beckoned both seasoned riders and casual enthusiasts alike to “ride on the wild side.” Nestled in the heart of a Big 5 park, Marakele provided the perfect canvas for this extraordinary cycling experience, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between adventure and conservation.
Drawing over 200 participants from Limpopo and Gauteng, the event was a resounding success, setting the stage for an eagerly anticipated annual tradition. Scheduled to kick off entries in September 2024, next year’s challenge promises even more thrills and spills across four distinct routes: 10km, 20km, 40km, and 70km. Adventurous cyclists had the opportunity to venture deep into the Big 5 territory with the longer routes, ensuring an adrenaline-fueled journey through the wild.
Ensuring the safety of both riders and wildlife, SANParks rangers and Honorary Rangers meticulously monitored the trails, allowing participants to immerse themselves in the natural splendor of Marakele with peace of mind.
But the excitement didn’t stop there. Thanks to the generous sponsorship from ArcelorMittal Thabazimbi Iron Ore Mine, SANParks unveiled a new 6km Walking Trail and a network of Mountain Bike Trails within the park. Featuring accreditation paths ranging from the leisurely 8km Green MTB to the challenging 20km Black MTB trails, these routes offer visitors an immersive experience in Marakele’s diverse landscapes.
As the dust settles on the inaugural Marakele MTB Challenge, cyclists and nature enthusiasts alike are already gearing up for next year’s event. With anticipation building for the 2025 edition, participants are encouraged to lace up their shoes and saddle up their bikes for another unforgettable journey through the untamed beauty of Marakele National Park.
