Hard Work at Eskom Keeps the Lights On

"Eskom keeps the lights on"

Minister in the Presidency for Electricity, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has credited the hard work of Eskom officials for the recent improvements in South Africa’s electricity supply. Speaking at a media briefing at Megawatt Park, Dr. Ramokgopa highlighted the strides made under the Energy Action Plan, introduced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in July 2022.

South Africa has experienced at least 54 consecutive days without load shedding. “What we are seeing now is an exceptionally improved energy situation due to a constellation of efforts by Eskom. It’s also an all-of-government effort to resolve the country’s energy deficit,” Dr. Ramokgopa said. He acknowledged that challenges remain, but stressed the importance of staying focused on returning power units to service promptly and not becoming discouraged by setbacks.

Addressing reports about high diesel consumption to maintain power supply, Dr. Ramokgopa clarified that Open Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGTs) is a designed part of Eskom’s fleet, used during peak demand periods. He noted a significant reduction in diesel use: “Previously, OCGTs were used about 17% of the time on average. Now, it’s just shy of 6%. From April 1 to May 16, 2024, Eskom spent R1.24 billion on diesel, compared to R5.2 billion during the same period last year, marking a 78% decrease.”

Dr. Ramokgopa emphasized the role of solar energy in combating load shedding. “The Energy Action Plan’s Outcome 4 calls for incentives to aggressively roll out rooftop solar solutions by both industry and households. We have doubled the rooftop solar capacity from about 2,100 MW to 4,400 MW,” he said.

The Minister encouraged Eskom employees to continue their diligent work. “As consummate professionals, you have done very well to get us to where we are. We are still looking for additional improved performance on your side. On behalf of Cabinet, we want to say thank you
