Traffic Prayers Urged for Safer Easter

Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga has called for faith groups and traditional
healers to pray along major routes like the N2 highway at Mkhondo’s entrance, seeking
divine intervention to reduce road carnages. Reckless driving by licensed motorists and
drunkenness behind the wheel have been cited as primary causes of South Africa’s high
road fatalities.

“My stern warning is not to board vehicles driven by unlicensed or intoxicated
individuals, nor unroadworthy buses or taxis,” Chikunga cautioned. “Desist from
entering any vehicle operated by a ‘licensed’ driver who cannot drive properly.”

Last Easter, Mpumalanga recorded fewer deaths and accidents compared to the
previous year. However, Chikunga anticipates heavier traffic due to the resumption of
the Zionist Christian Church pilgrimage drawing travellers countrywide, including from
Mkhondo itself.

“My plea is for all to rally around praying for sober driving. Prayer women of different
denominations should entreat sobriety,” she urged. “Traditional leaders, as custodians,
must also rally their subjects against drink-driving.”

MEC for Community Safety Vusi Shongwe echoed the call for responsible conduct. He
advised avoiding liquor consumption regardless of destination – whether church services
or holidays. Drunkenness remains a major accident catalyst.

Chikunga revealed some traditional healers previously attempted to recall wandering
spirits of accident victims from crash sites. As the Easter weekend begins, her message
is clear: “Steer clear of alcohol if travelling.”
