The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has strongly refuted allegations of involvement in recent
political violence in KwaZulu-Natal. In a media statement, the party claims these accusations
are part of an “orchestrated strategy by the ANC to counter the resurgence of the IFP”
ahead of the 2024 national and provincial elections.
The IFP alleges the ANC held a meeting on March 2nd to “hatch plans to disrupt IFP
campaign activities” which led to violence breaking out on March 10th. They assert an ANC
statement condemning the clashes was pre-written for release on March 11th.
“The allegations levelled against the IFP are without merit, without basis and devoid of any
truth,” the statement reads. “We reject all and any attempts by the ANC to stir violence as a
campaign tool in KwaZulu-Natal.”
The party called on members to “remain focused” on the May 29th elections and “not be
distracted from our onward march to victory.”
Regarding a potential meeting proposed by President Cyril Ramaphosa between the IFP
and ANC, the IFP stated: “As far as we are concerned such a meeting is not necessary as
the IFP is not involved in any acts of violence.”
However, the IFP said if such a meeting occurred, the ANC would need to first explain the
alleged March 2nd meeting where disrupting IFP campaigning was planned.
Other allegations included ANC-branded items being improperly distributed at a government
event, and claims certain political figures owe apologies for “disgraceful and uncultured
behaviour.”
