In a media briefing addressing recent immigration controversies, Minister of Home Affairs Dr Aaron Motsoaledi clarified the department’s stance on foreign nationals. The briefing followed a circular issued on December 21, 2023, to the Border Management Authority (BMA) regarding the handling of certain foreign nationals at ports of entry.

Motsoaledi reassured the public that the circular aimed to guide BMA officials, not deter tourists. “The Department of Home Affairs was accused of chasing away tourists out of the country and risking the collapse of the tourism sector,” he said. “We will gain nothing by destroying the tourism industry, which is one of the pillars of the economy.”

Emphasizing the importance of tourism, Motsoaledi stressed the circular intended to ensure proper documentation and compliance with immigration laws. He reiterated the government’s commitment to facilitating legitimate travel while maintaining security and upholding regulations.

The minister acknowledged concerns raised by various stakeholders and vowed to address any misunderstandings or unintended consequences of the circular. He urged the public and industry players to work collaboratively with the department to strike a balance between economic interests and national security.
