Rebuilding squad for next world cup cycle

Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus has revealed plans to phase out some of the older
players in the squad as South Africa begins preparations for the next World Cup cycle.
Despite acknowledging the excellent form of captain Siya Kolisi at Racing 92 in France,
Erasmus emphasized the need for a transitional approach.

“Siya Kolisi is playing excellent rugby for Racing 92 in France and will be considered for this
year’s Tests,” Erasmus stated. “However, we will phase out some of the older players in the
build-up to the next World Cup.”

Eighteen members of the Springbok squad that clinched the 2023 World Cup in France are
currently over 30 years old, with Kolisi now aged 32. Erasmus expressed a preference for
having his captain playing domestically to facilitate more frequent interactions.

The Springbok coach underscored the importance of continuous evolution and adaptation,
cautioning against complacency after their recent success. “As we said before last year’s
tournament, there was no way that we would be successful if we kept doing things in the
same way,” he said. “We need to evolve our game once more, as teams will definitely have
looked at how we play and how they think they can stop us.”

Erasmus unveiled a new-look management team, including coaches Tony Brown and Jerry
Flannery, who will make their debut when the Springboks face Wales at Twickenham on
June 22nd.

“This is a watershed year for South African rugby with the off-field developments that are
being discussed, and it’s our job to make sure that everything remains on track on the field,”
Erasmus added. “I’m excited about the coaching and management team we’ve put together
and really looking forward to getting out there once again.”
