IEC fires official for party candidate list leak

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has terminated the employment of an official
responsible for leaking the candidate lists of the African National Congress (ANC) and
uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) Party. The leaked lists circulated on social media mere hours after
the parties submitted them on Friday.

IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo revealed during a briefing on Monday that an
internal investigation traced the source of the leak to a workstation at the IEC headquarters.
“The investigation has narrowed the source of the disclosure to a workstation that has been
used to generate and store those reports,” Mamabolo stated.

He explained that after the lists were generated, they were subsequently deleted from the
workstation, which was then secured for forensic analysis. The official responsible for the
leak was given an opportunity to provide reasons against termination before the decision
was made to dismiss them.

While the ANC has expressed satisfaction with the IEC’s handling of the isolated incident,
the MK Party has announced plans to lodge a formal complaint. Mamabolo assured that
stringent measures are in place to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
