“Card Skimming Spike – Stay Vigilant, Says Hawks”

Card skimming theft is on the rise in South Africa, and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) is urging vigilance from the public. “It’s your responsibility to guard against it,” warned Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, Hawks spokesperson.

The issue has been highlighted by the recent arrest of a 32-year-old petrol pump attendant in Mpumalanga this week. He was apprehended at the Ultra City N4 filling station in Middelburg on Monday and is due to appear in the Middelburg Specialised Commercial Crime Court.

Card skimmers steal personal and financial information by compromising card terminals through methods like attaching devices that clone card data when inserted. To protect yourself, the Hawks advise using contactless “tap-to-pay” options and mobile wallets when possible as they are more secure.

When a card insert is required, carefully inspect the terminal for any irregularities or attachments before use. Be wary of distractions while making your transaction. Additionally, increasing fraud monitoring with your bank can provide an extra layer of security through instant alerts on suspicious activity.

As this type of crime continues to escalate nationwide, remaining vigilant is crucial. “Card skimming can only occur if your card is inserted, so be extremely cautious anytime this is required,” Sekgotodi stated.
