MEC urges support for special schools

Mpumalanga MEC for Education Bonakele Majuba convened a meeting with principals
and school governing body chairpersons from the province’s 18 special schools
yesterday in Emakhazeni. The aim was to review the start of the 2024 academic year,
prepare for governing body elections, discuss sports programs, and address challenges
facing special needs learners.

In his remarks, MEC Majuba emphasized the need to support special schools equally
with mainstream schools. He said every child has potential that must be unlocked
through proper care and support. The MEC acknowledged visiting several special
schools where he observed room for improvement. He also noted litigation from special
schools makes up a disproportionate share of cases received by the department
monthly.

MEC Majuba urged transparent discussion of achievements and persisting hurdles. He
said the department seeks to avoid learning of issues at special schools from outside
stakeholders and media. The MEC concluded by stating, “Let us prioritize these schools
with unwavering commitment. Let our collective energy, expertise, and resources be
synergized to make this vision a reality.”

Principals provided updates on the start of 2024 and preparations for governing body
elections. Attendees addressed learners’ needs, quality of teaching and learning, sports
programs, and other matters. The MEC emphasized that no child requiring special care
should be denied admission or left unsupported.

The meeting aimed to gather direct insights and facilitate solutions to challenges facing
special schools. MEC Majuba affirmed the department’s commitment to harness
collective efforts to improve outcomes for special needs learners. Equal support for
mainstream and special schools is critical so no child is left behind.
