Heavy rains predicted for parts of SA

Warning of ‘severe’ thunderstorms over Gauteng, Limpopo & Mpumalanga

The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms
over the central parts of the country.

Forecaster Ishmael Moyo said rainfall is expected throughout the weekend. The predicted
downpours come in the wake of the heatwave conditions in the northern parts of the country over
the past week.

“We expect those severe thunderstorms to bring large amounts of hail, damaging winds, as well as
heavy downpours that may result in localised flooding in low-lying areas, bridges and damage to
infrastructure,” warned Moyo.

“For tomorrow (Saturday), we expect a similar pattern as well, 30% in the east with a 60% chance
over the eastern interior.

“We currently do not have a heatwave advisory. I believe most of those areas that had a heatwave
advisory had it up until yesterday (Thursday). So, with this cooling and thunderstorms coming today,
tomorrow and the next few days, that might cool down the temperature significantly.”
