Police in Limpopo have launched a manhunt for a Muyexe village man following the death of his 15-year-old daughter on Tuesday. The teen passed away at Letaba Hospital months after an alleged assault by her father.
According to spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba, the girl was originally admitted to Nkhensani Hospital in November with severe upper body injuries. Police say the injuries stemmed from an attack by her father at their home.
The teenager was later transferred to Letaba Hospital due to the gravity of her wounds. Despite months of treatment, she ultimately succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday.
A murder case has now been opened as authorities search for the missing father. “The perpetrator fled after the incident and has been evading arrest,” said Ledwaba.
Police are following up on leads to apprehend the suspect. They have called on the public to come forward with any information that could help locate him.
Gender-based violence remains an ongoing crisis in South Africa. Over 3,800 women were murdered between April 2020 and March 2021, according to government data.
Authorities say robust policing and community engagement are key to preventing further tragedies. “We must work together to stop the scourge of violence against women and girls,” Ledwaba stated.
As the investigation continues, police have assured the suspect will be brought to justice if found.
