Police have arrested two young men after the body of a 15-year-old girl was discovered in Balfour on Friday morning.
The victim was found half-naked next to an unfinished house in the Goede Section just after 9 a.m., police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said in a statement.
A plastic wrapping covered her private parts. Paramedics certified the teen dead at the scene.
“Police opened a murder case and immediately activated all possible resources,” Mohlala said.
Within hours, a 19-year-old male was arrested Saturday morning in connection with the slaying. An 18-year-old suspect was apprehended that afternoon.
Investigators have not ruled out the possibility the girl was sexually assaulted. An autopsy will be conducted.
Provincial Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Semakaleng Daphney Manamela expressed outrage given the killing comes on the heels of a 16-day activism campaign against violence targeting women and children.
“This is a very shameful incident,” Manamela said while praising investigators for the swift arrests.
The suspects were expected in court Monday on murder charges. Additional counts may follow as the investigation continues, police said.
