The 36-year-old administrative clerk for the provincial police, who was shot and killed on October 26 in the afternoon by two robbers on the R40 near Barberton, has been officially identified as Welcome Ntimba.
The investigation into Ntimba’s murder is still underway, according to Captain Maginseni Nkosi, a province police spokeswoman, no arrests have been made on the individuals who shot and killed him.
Ntimba and two of his colleagues were on their way to Barberton when saw two guys in need of a lift close to Westend Shopping Centre and they decided to take them.
According to information from the police, the car was on the R40 nearing the Kaapsehoop turn-off when the two suspects asked to be let out.
One of his coworkers, seated in the front passenger seat, witnessed one of the suspects take out a gun as he halted the vehicle. While Ntimba was shot in the upper torso and killed, the colleague was able to escape the car and only suffered minor injuries in the process.
It is said that the second suspect had a gun as well. They robbed the coworkers of their cellphones, and when they saw Ntimba’s colleague who had gotten out of the car had a gun and started shooting at the thieves, they fled the scene on foot.
