Accused to pay back SARS after conviction for fraudJune 15, 2023
After being apprehended by police in Piet Retief on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, with a
Toyota Rav4 believed to be a stolen vehicle, a 44-year-old male suspect was arraigned
in court on Wednesday, June 14, 2023.
Police in Piet Retief received information provided by their counterparts from Car
Tracker about a Rav 4 SUV which was reportedly stolen on 10 June 2023 in Rosebank
(Gauteng Province) and further details indicated that the vehicle was travelling around
Ermelo towards Piet Retief direction.
Members responded to the complaint and the car was spotted and stopped.
During the investigation, Simphiwe Collen Zwane who was the driver, alleged that he
was going to deliver the vehicle to a buyer.
Police then requested documents from the vehicle. It is also reported that the driver
produced some documents which seemed fraudulent. He was then charged with
possession of a suspected motor vehicle as well as fraud.
During Zwane’s appearance at the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 14
June, the Magistrate postponed his case to 21 June 2023 for a formal bail application
meanwhile he was remanded in custody.
Police cannot rule out the possibility of adding an extra charge of theft of a motor
vehicle against him pending the investigation.
